General HVAC in Hospitals

If there is one place where a healthy climate is important, it is in hospitals and other health care facilities. This is important for the safety and health of vulnerable patients, but also to protect vulnerable high end medical equipment. Besides viruses and bacteria, also gaseous contamination can be a threat to the health of patients. Therefore series of aspects need to be considered when designing HVAC systems for medical facilities.

Why to use activated carbon filters in the General HVAC?

Where do these harmful gaseous contaminations originate from in the case of a hospital? Most hospitals are located in a city environment. There are many different sources of polluting gasses around a hospital building. For example, traffic, neighbouring production facilities of other companies. Another source of harmful gasses can be the presence of a helicopter pad on the roof of the hospital. During take-off and landing diesel fumes could enter the hospitals centralized ventilation system on that same roof.

How do these activated carbon filters work?

Every central ventilation system is equipped with particle filters to make sure fine dust is not present in the air inside the building. However, these gas molecules are too small to be caught by the finest particle filters, like HEPA. For this we can use the activated carbon filters which remove the gas molecules by means of adsorption. For this method of filtration activated carbon is generally used. Perforated cylindrical cartridges are filled with activated carbon. Air passes through the filter and the gasses stick to the surface of the carbon.
